Loamy soil  The perfect soil, 40% sand, 40% silt, 20% clay, drains well yet holds moisture/nutrients. Top as needed with compost/mushroom compost.

Suitable plants include Wisteria, Erythronium, Black Bamboo, Rubus tricolor, Delphinium, most plants excluding those listed under peaty soils

Chalky soil  An alkaline soil, can contain large amounts of stones, drys out quickly,

can block the release of trace elements.

Improve with mushroom compost or composted bark.

Suitable plants include Lilac, Weigela, Lilium candidum, Pink, Philadelphus, Buddleia, Ceanothus, Euonymus, Hebe, Forsythia, Daphne, Eleagnus, Escallonia, Fuchsia

Peaty soil  Has lots of organic material, acidity high, can hold too much water.

Improve with drainage/grit and fertiliser.

Suitable plants include Heather, Crinodendron, Hamamelis, Camellia, Rhododendron, Coreopsis, Pernettya, Pieris, Skimmia, Hamamelis, Gaultheria, Magnolia (except kobus

Silty soil  Most fertile, looks like dark sand when dry, has fine organic matter holds moisture/nutrients well. Add compost as the plants grow.

Suitable plants include Mahonia, Phormium, Ornamental Vine,

Hakonechloa macra ‘aureola’, Nicotiana alata, most plants excluding those listed under peaty soils

Sandy soil  Gritty texture, easy to cultivate, hold water and nutrients poorly.

Improve with mushroom compost.

Suitable plants include Broom, Tulip, Lavatera, Cistus, Hibiscus syriacus, Berberis, Convolvulus, Eleagnus, Lavandula, Salvia, Tamarix, Symphorocarpus, Corylus, Genista, Hypericum, Potentilla, Rosmarinus, Sambucus, Senecio, Spiraea, Helichrysum

Clay soil  When wet very sticky, lumpy and pliable, but when dry rock hard. Holds water and nutrients well. Can suffer from water logging.

Improve with course gritty sand and composted bark.
